Synopsis

“Night and Fog in Kurdistan” tells the story of seven teenage girls who fled the ISIS genocide of Yazidis in 2014. In quest for documenting the traces of a genocide and the plight of surviving, the director, connected to the characters via her own Kurdish background and traumas of a childhood spent in war, follows them for five years, through their years of residence in refugee camps in Turkey, as well as their later relocations to European countries.

 

Biography

 Şîlan is a Kurdish filmmaker and producer. She was born and grown up in Mahabad, a Kurdish city in Iran, she graduated with a BA degree in fine arts (Cinema-Director) from Sureh University in Tehran in 2008. Also she participated in documentary filmmaking workshop titled “personal language in documentary film” under the supervision of professor Arne Bro in Danish film school in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is alumni of Berlinale talents and Greenhouse (Close up). Şîlan has made several documentaries and short films on social issues in Kurdistan that have been screened and won various awards in national and international film festivals such as, International Women’s Film Festival, Independent Film Festival, Third Eye Asian Film Festival, Reggio Film Festival, Baghdad International Film Festival, Kimera International Film Festival, Digital Film Festival, Yilmaz Guney International Film, Flying Broom International, Human Rights Film Festival, Black Film Festival, Amed Documentary Film Festival, Kane International Film Festival.
